LMS Admin - Acquisition Challenge

Seattle WA Instructional Designer (Contract) November 2008 – March 2009

SUMMARY

Following Liberty Mutual’s acquisition of Safeco, the organization faced a massive challenge: integrating over 3,000 hours of legacy training content into a new learning management system (LMS). Much of the existing material was outdated, non-SCORM-compliant, and lacked standardized documentation, making it difficult to preserve learning integrity and meet compliance requirements.

1st Challenge

Each company used different LMS systems, which weren't compatible, therefore the migrated training content from Safeco to Liberty's LMS had to be completed manually.

3rd Challenge

1st Challenge

Much of the existing Liberty Mutual material required updates, and Liberty Mutual's LMS wasn't SCORM-compatible. They use WebEx and housed all of their training content within a SharePoint repository.

Intention

The primary mission was to lead change management efforts and equip both new and existing employees with the skills and mindset needed to successfully navigate the integration of Safeco into Liberty Mutual.

Solution

Solution

As the lead instructional designer, I spearheaded the migration and transformation of Safeco’s training assets into Liberty Mutual’s SharePoint.

This included:

  • Rebuilding non-SCORM-compliant modules using modern authoring tools like Captivate, SnagIt, and PowerPoint.

  • Designing custom curriculum content by extracting insights from existing course documentation and conducting SME interviews.

  • Producing detailed storyboards to guide eLearning video development.

  • Establishing a governance framework for content taxonomy to ensure consistent organization, tracking, and archiving of depreciated learning material.

  • Ensuring all content met accreditation and certification standards

Impact

Solution

The successful migration enabled Liberty Mutual to preserve critical training resources while modernizing delivery and compliance. Eventually they would have a  new LMS Lectora to house a fully functional, searchable, and accredited library of learning content, supporting seamless onboarding and continued education for thousands of employees across departments. The governance program laid the foundation for scalable content management and future instructional design initiatives.
